Welcome to the Slanted Cave
In the north of the island lies a mysterious slanted cave whose walls appear to be formed of rock plates, and whose floor resembles the flowing curves left by lava as it solidifies. Within the crevices of these curves, small pools of seawater form, where evaporation creates thin layers of salt crystals — like little ice rinks that, years ago, were collected by many Ibiza locals.
The shapes taken by the stones in this cave and throughout the surrounding area tell a story. A geological story. They reveal how the island of Ibiza was shaped during the Jurassic period. “These are Kimmeridgian materials” (one of the final stages of the Jurassic), explains geologist Luis Alberto Tostón, very similar to those also found in Sa Caleta, though more spectacular here. “They are the same small rhythms of limestone and marl, but here you can see them in all their splendor,” adds the geologist, highlighting the clarity with which the tabular formations and the alternation of materials (known as rhythmites) are revealed. These are formations that are “fractured, folded, and so vertical that they clearly show the deformation the island underwent to become what it is today,” the expert concludes.
